Right to Repair is the legal principle that consumers should be free to maintain, repair, or modify the products they buy, such as automobiles, electronics, and farm equipment, without without being locked out from using 3rd party repair services or parts. It advocates against artificially imposed software lockouts, such as preventing owners of printers from using 3rd party ink, and preventing 3rd party replacement parts from being used in the product.
Manufacturers should be required to give independent repair shops the same repair tools that the manufacturer and dealers have access to. If a manufacturer wants to make a product that is categorically unrepairable, that’s fine, but any repair tools that the manufacturer chooses to make should be accessible to everyone.
